You can shoot in an Estonian winter, but an outdoor range is the hardest way to do it. Cold, wind, darkness and clumsy fingers all work against a first-timer. If you want to enjoy the experience and learn properly, the better choice is a heated indoor range with an instructor beside you. That is what we offer at Tondi Shooting Range in Tallinn: no experience needed, every session supervised by professional instructors, safety training included, and a wide selection of firearms to try.
This guide explains what winter really changes at an open-air range, how to prepare if you still want to shoot outside, and why most visitors, from tourists to bachelor parties to office teams, are happier indoors from November to March.
Shooting looks simple: stand, aim, squeeze. In reality it relies on small, precise movements, and the cold interferes with nearly all of them.
Your hands go first. Cold fingers lose feeling and fine control. Pistol shooting depends on a steady grip and a smooth trigger press, and numb fingers make both harder. Many beginners end up concentrating on how cold they are instead of on the target.
Gloves create their own problems. Warm gloves are usually too thick to feel the trigger properly. Thin gloves are easier to shoot in but do little against an Estonian wind. You end up choosing between warmth and control.
Daylight is short. In midwinter, daylight in northern Estonia lasts only a few hours. An outdoor session has to be squeezed into that window, or run under artificial light, which adds complexity.
Wind, snow and ice add noise to everything. Standing on slippery ground, wiping snow off your eyewear and shifting your weight to stay warm all pull attention away from the basics.
Your body spends energy on staying warm. Shivering is tiring. Concentration drops, reactions slow and sessions feel longer than they are.
None of this makes outdoor winter shooting impossible. Hunters, sport shooters and soldiers do it regularly. But they are equipped, experienced and have a reason to be out there. If you are visiting Tallinn for a weekend and want to try shooting for the first time, there is little reason to make it harder than it needs to be.
A common assumption is that winter ranges are more relaxed because fewer people are there. The opposite is true. Estonian rules require commercial ranges to operate with qualified supervision, and unsupervised shooting is not permitted in paid sessions. The safety regulations for ranges are published openly on Riigi Teataja, the state gazette, and they apply regardless of the season.
In practice, good ranges take cold weather into account. Reduced dexterity means a longer briefing, closer supervision and more careful attention to how each shooter handles a firearm. An indoor, heated range makes that easier, because the instructor can focus on your technique rather than on your frostbitten fingers.
At Tondi, every session is run by professional instructors and safety training is part of the experience. Before you pick up a firearm, you learn the basic rules of handling it. If you want to read them in advance, our guides cover the shooting range rules Tallinn visitors should know and a short visitor safety checklist.
Our range is indoors. For winter visitors, that changes the experience in several concrete ways.
The range is also a very good winter activity because Tallinn has a long, dark season. A shooting session gives groups something active and different to do when the usual outdoor options, like walking tours, are less appealing.
No. Most of our guests have never held a firearm. The session begins with a briefing on safe handling, where you stand, how to hold the firearm and what the commands mean. An instructor stays with you while you shoot, corrects your technique and keeps the session safe and relaxed.

If you want a primer before you come, read our beginner’s guide to pistol shooting basics. It covers stance, grip and aiming in plain language. You do not have to read it to enjoy your visit, but it helps if you like to know what to expect.
The good news for an indoor range: you do not need special gear. Most equipment is provided, and you can dress as you would for a normal day out in Tallinn.
A few practical tips:

Some people want the full open-air experience, and that is a reasonable goal. If you do, plan for these points:
Outdoor tactical formats do exist in the Tondi team’s programme, including days that combine firearms with drones in the open air. These are best chosen by guests who already have some experience and enjoy the outdoors. If you are unsure, start indoors. You can always add an outdoor day later.

Dark months are peak season for group events in Tallinn. People look for something to do indoors, together, that is not just another dinner.

Corporate events and team building. Winter is when many companies hold year-end events and team days. Shooting teaches calm communication and focus, and everyone starts at the same level. Our “Vali ise kolleegidele pakett” starts from €25 per person, “Turvaline ettevõte” from €80 per person and the first drone training for companies from €85 per person. See our guides on why a shooting range works for team building in Tallinn and the no-experience corporate team event.
